Frequently Asked Questions – Invisalign in Memphis

Invisalign trays must be worn for a minimum of 20 to 22 hours per day. The trays should only be removed while eating or brushing. If the aligner trays are worn for less than 20 hours per day, you risk extending your treatment timeline. Failure to follow the 22-hour rule may also increase the level of discomfort you experience when you do place your trays. This is because when your trays are not in, your teeth may revert back to their original position.

If patients do report discomfort resulting from Invisalign treatments, it is typically during the first day or two after placing a new tray. This is the time when there is the greatest amount of pressure pushing your teeth into better alignment. It may be possible to sleep through this time by inserting new trays right before going to bed.

Your teeth may be sensitive while they are moving. Try avoiding hard foods such as nuts and candy that can aggravate your teeth. The first few days following the placement of your new aligners, you will find it easier to resume your normal eating habits.

Treatment time varies from one patient to the next, depending upon the severity of the orthodontic problem being addressed. That said, treatment with Invisalign is often shorter than treatment with traditional braces, and can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months.

In order for Dr. Messer to be of the most help, you will need to keep him updated on possible side effects during your periodic check-ups (typically every 8 to 12 weeks). At that time, Dr. Messer can adjust your trays if needed or recommend remedies.

There are two main causes of Invisalign discomfort: tooth pressure and friction against the gum tissue. Invisalign trays gradually move the teeth into better alignment through micro-movements.  Each new tray is slightly different than the preceding tray to slowly move the teeth into alignment.  During the first few days after placing a new tray, you may feel pressure on specific teeth. The minor discomfort will gradually subside as those teeth move closer to their target, usually within a couple of days of tray placement. Some of our Memphis patients experience discomfort caused by the edges of their aligner trays. While the trays are carefully constructed to not cut into the gums and cheeks, minor irritation can occur.

Unlike braces, you can eat whatever you like as long as you remove your Invisalign aligners before eating! Before you place the aligners back in your mouth, it’s important to brush your teeth and clean your aligners first.

Invisalign treatment moves your teeth by applying gentle, constant force, but some people do feel temporary discomfort for the first few days of wearing a new set of aligners. Typically, people describe it as feeling “pressure” and it’s normal — it’s a sign your Invisalign clear aligners are working and transforming your smile.

Yes!  Invisalign offers several accessories for cleaning aligners, aligner cases, etc.  Click here for more information!

You will be given specific instructions on how often you need to wear your retainers. Typically, you wear your retainers at night while you are sleeping.

Most doctors recommend that anyone who has completed orthodontic treatment, whether with braces or Invisalign treatment, use a retainer to prevent teeth from gradually shifting back toward their initial position.

No, gum will stick to your Invisalign aligners. We recommend removing your aligners for all meals and snacks, including gum.

Invisalign clear aligners are designed to move each tooth individually. Because bridgework connects two or more teeth, clear aligners may not be effective.
